It’s no secret that vitamins and minerals are beneficial to your body, but did you know that certain minerals can have positive effects on your teeth as well? It’s true! In the past, you may have heard your dentist talk about dental health products that have fluoride in them. Dentists frequently recommend these products because they strengthen the enamel that protects each and every one of your teeth from decay.
Most people know that fluoride is good for your teeth, but they just don’t know why. Here at Center Creek Dental in Lehi, Utah, we would like to tell you why fluoride is so important. Dr. Ferrell, our dentist, can help you find the right fluoride products for your teeth.
Fluoride is an element found in rocks and soil and is often added to toothpaste. Essentially, fluoride can help your tooth enamel in two ways. First, when a person’s teeth are still beginning to develop, this component helps the enamel harden as it develops so it can be as resistant to cavities and decay as it possibly can. It should be noted, though, that fluoride products should not be used by children younger than two years old. Second, fluoride helps to harden the enamel on teeth that have already emerged as well.
There are other sources of fluoride as well, including fluoridated tap water, mouthwash, and enamel varnishes that can be applied by a professional.
